a record of space and time

acrylic painting on canvas

6 ft by 3 ft ( 2 3ft square canvases stacked)

2025

this is an experimental painting of a warped perspective from a staircase of two levels of a building. the top level is darker and leads down a hallway of doors that line the wall as it goes in. the lower level is bright, and full of mist, and the space is open. starting from an underpainting of red and green, this painting was built up with blue washes of acrylic paint, a technique i experimented with.
when i was painting this, i started with a sketch and underpainting without using any blue paint so that i could build up the darks and lights through shadow before i encorporated hue and saturation. after red, i did the same thing with only green, and then with yellow, and then finally i added blue on top of everything. this method ensured that each color on every part of the canvas was deeply saturated. none of the colors were mixed on the palette, instead letting the color theory and transperancy of the paint do the work.
